The Christmas tree is considered the main decoration for the Christmas holidays in France. The French often decorate their Christmas trees with dolls, flowers, candles, fruit, colored Christmas balls, gold or silver garland and gold or silver pine cones.
Traditionally, families in France go out in the woods on Christmas Eve to select a tree. The men of the family bring back a freshly cut log, which is referred to as the Yule Log. After circling the room three times, the log is then placed into the fireplace. Wine, oil and salt are poured over the log, prayers are offered and Christmas songs are sung.
