For the best wine and cheese party, serve three to five cheeses from each cheese category. One of the categories is fresh cheese, which includes cream cheese and mascarpone. Semi-soft cheeses are another category and include havarti and fontana. Semi-hard cheeses include some cheddars and Gouda.
Hard cheese examples are other kinds of cheddar, mostly older or harder varieties, and Parmesan. Other cheeses are blue, Limburger, Brie and Camembert. Pair the cheeses with nuts, fruits, crackers and other foods like sausage, honey, radishes and very dark chocolate.
Next, choose your wine to pair with each kind of cheese. An example is to pair Gouda with semi-sweet or semi-dry Rieslings. Cheddar goes well with Rose, Bordeaux or Pinot Noir.
Other ways to make your party great are to make sure you have enough cheese and wine for each person. Plan on 2 to 4 ounces of cheese per person and eight bottles of wine for 12 guests.
Serve cheese and red wine at room temperature, so take it out of the refrigerator two to three hours before the party. Suggest that guests taste the cheese alone first, then with the wine, then with whatever else you are serving at the party.Learn more about Party Planning
