Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., is said to have proposed the idea for Father's Day in 1909 after listening to a Mother's Day sermon. Dodd, who was raised by her widower father, lobbied churches, the YMCA, government officials and local businesses to support her idea. As a result, Washington's governor proclaimed July 19, 1910, the nation's first Father's Day. The idea slowly spread. Although President Wilson, and later President Coolidge, supported the idea, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson established the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. It became an official nationwide holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon made Johnson's proclamation permanent.
