Styles of light-up Christmas tree toppers include a five-pointed star, the Star of Bethlehem, an angel or a snowflake. Other somewhat common designs include wreaths, ribbon bows and starburst shapes. Many tree toppers must be plugged into an outlet in order to light up. Battery-powered tree toppers with built-in timers are also available.
A wide variety of light-up tree toppers are available, especially in angel and star designs. Some of the angel toppers feature ornate clothing, feathered wings and fiber-optic lighting; others are more simplistic and may be made completely of plastic. Star designs include colors such as white, gold or silver or a multi-colored design reminiscent of stained glass. Some of the stars feature color-changing LED lights.
Elaborate floral and starburst designs are also available as tree toppers. Other designs look like large bows made out of ribbon; these have tiny LED lights inside that are only visible when the lights are illuminated.
Many tree toppers are designed for indoor use only; read the packaging thoroughly before use to ensure safe operation. Plug-in tree toppers may be connected to extension-cord style Christmas tree lights designed to connect one strand to another to minimize the number or cords dangling from the holiday tree.
