In 2014, Hanukkah began at sunset on Dec. 16 and ended on the evening of Dec. 24. It began on a Tuesday and ended on a Wednesday.
Hanukkah is an eight day Festival of Lights. It is a celebration in the memory of the victory by the Israelites over the Syrian Greek army. It also commemorates the subsequent restoration of the menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the one day's worth of oil lasting eight.
During Hanukkah, a menorah is lit each night. A new candle is added each night amongst those of the previous days. Others also eat special Hanukkah food or exchange gifts.
