In 2014, Hanukkah began at sunset on Dec. 16 and ended on the evening of Dec. 24. It began on a Tuesday and ended on a Wednesday.

It also commemorates the subsequent restoration of the menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the one day's worth of oil lasting eight.
During Hanukkah, a menorah is lit each night. A new candle is added each night amongst those of the previous days. Others also eat special Hanukkah food or exchange gifts.
