Burial arrangements for veterans in national cemeteries need to be made through a funeral home or cremation office the time of death, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, National Cemetery Administration. Gravesites cannot be reserved in advance.
The Veterans Administration recommends that the veteran notify his or her family of burial intentions in advance. Instructions should include choice of funeral home or cremation office and location of discharge papers required to prove eligibility. Available burial benefits include a gravesite in any one of 131 national cemeteries, space permitting. Cremated remains are buried or interned in accordance with the veteran's wishes.
