One form of the English Shabbat blessing reads, "Blessed are you, Lord our God, king of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of Holy Shabbat." Traditionally, the eldest female of a home lights the Shabbat candles and recites the blessing.
The traditional blessing is in Hebrew, but various English translations exist. The Shabbat candles are lit just before sundown on Friday evenings and during recitation, the woman normally closes or covers her eyes. After the standard blessing, many women pray for or bless their children, loved ones and others in need of good health.
A modified version of the blessing exists for Christians observing Shabbat. It extends the verse to thank God for sending Jesus as a savior.
