The Microsoft Xbox was invented in 1998 and was officially released in 2001 in the United States. It was originally called the DirectX Box and ran on Windows 2000.
The Xbox was developed with online gaming in mind, giving it a unique advantage on its competitors, the Sony PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube. The Xbox was officially revealed by Bill Gates at the Consumer Electronics Show of 2001. It was successful in the market, especially due to Halo, which was the console's first popular game. This was an exclusive, first-person shooter adapted from Halo: Combat Evolved, a third-person shooter. The game sold more than 1 million copies.
Xbox Live, the console's online gaming community, launched in 2002. In 2005, the Xbox 360 was revealed.
