Some popular games released in 2014 include "Dragon Age: Inquisition," "Mario Kart 8," "Far Cry 4," "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" and "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor." Popular indie games released that year include "Shovel Knight" and "Five Nights at Freddy's."
"Dragon Age: Inquisition" continued the popular "Dragon Age" series by Bioware. Like the other games in the series, it is a fantasy role-playing game with an intricate and branching story.
"Mario Kart 8" and "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" were continuations of popular Nintendo series. "Mario Kart 8" lets players race go-karts with the cast of the "Super Mario Bros." games, while "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" includes those characters along with a wide range of others in a free-for-all fighting game.
"Far Cry 4" was another sequel that followed in the footsteps of its predecessors, in this case a first-person shooter in a wilderness setting.
"Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" was set in J.R.R. Tolkien's famous fantasy world and cast players as a Ranger named Talion who takes revenge on Sauron's forces after his family is killed.
"Shovel Knight" was the first game from Yacht Club Games and was a retro-style platformer. "Five Nights at Freddy's" is a horror game set in a parody of the Chuck E. Cheese restaurants.
