Scented sachets can be made by adding an essential or scent oil to uncooked rice and then sewing, folding, bundling or tying that scented rice into a fabric container. The uncooked rice will absorb the scented oils and give off that fragrance through the porous fabric, so it is best to use fabric that is not too dense or thick to allow the scent to escape. For example, light, thin fabrics, such as linen, or denser, porous fabrics like burlap make acceptable fabric containers for scented rice sachets.
Any kind of rice can be used for this project so long as it remains uncooked and is not a highly processed form of rice, such as instant rice. The first step is to pour the desired amount of rice into a nonporous bowl, such as one made from glass or ceramic. Those people who want to make only one sachet should use the amount of rice that corresponds to the desired size of the sachet. This amount should be increased exponentially for multiple sachets. The oil can be added to the rice in a ratio of about 2 teaspoons for every cup of rice. Essential oils, such as lavender, vanilla, cinnamon, mint, rosemary and eucalyptus, can all be used or mixed together to create the desired sachet scent.
