Mattel introduced the first Barbie doll in 1959 and sold about 350,000 in the first year of production. The original Barbie wore a black and white striped bathing suit and sold for $3.00. In 2004, an original boxed Barbie in mint condition sold on eBay for more than $3,500.00, and in 2006, a 1965 Barbie doll sold for $17,000.00, setting a new world record. Mattel produced the popular talking doll, Chatty Cathy, from 1960 to 1964. The 20-inch-tall vinyl doll had an innovative pull-string mechanism, allowing it to say random phrases, using a small internal turntable, needle and record. Other members of the vintage Chatty Cathy doll family include Singin' Chatty, Charmin' Chatty and Tiny Chatty Baby.
