Players can use the "Spore" Creature Creator by selecting from 228 unique creature parts that can be freely moved and oriented through the user interface to create a unique character design. Players also have a Paint tool option in "Spore's" Creature Creator that can give each creature design a unique color pattern. The Creature Creator tool allows players to play with their created creatures through a series of actions, such as dancing, emotive expressions and poses.
Once a player has completed his creature on the "Spore" Creature Creator, he can share either a video or a snapshot picture of it to his friends and network. The tool can only be used on either a Windows PC or a Mac.
The Creature Creator tool is standalone software that is based on the built-in Creature Editor feature of "Spore." The tool was released as a standalone feature prior to the release of "Spore" and had to be uninstalled while installing the full game. The software, which was released on June 18, 2008, also allowed players to upload their creations to the "Sporepedia" database. Within 18 days of the software's release, nearly 1.6 million creatures were uploaded and by Sept. 1, 2008, more than 3 million had been uploaded.
