What Types of Races Does Keeneland Host?

Keeneland Race Course hosts Thoroughbred horse races, including some of the country's top stakes events. Located in Lexington, Kentucky, Keeneland has two racing seasons and is the world's largest Thoroughbred auction facility, as of 2105.

Keeneland Race Course has conducted meets in April and October since it opened in 1936. The spring session includes several preps for the Kentucky Derby, and the Blue Grass Stakes is the most significant of those. In the fall, the track hosts several Breeders' Cup prep races.

Keeneland announced plans to host the actual Breeders' Cup for the first time in 2015. In the 2015 listing of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, three Breeders' Cup races are among the top Grade 1 races in the world: the Classic, the Turf and the Mile.

Keeneland was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and is also known for its reference library, which is one of the world’s biggest storehouses of information about Thoroughbreds.

Keeneland conducts four Thoroughbred auctions each year: the September Yearling Stock Sale, the November Breeding Stock Sale, the April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, and the January Horses of All Ages auction. Among the horses that have been sold at Keeneland are 19 Kentucky Derby winners, 21 Preakness winners, 18 Belmont winners and 11 Eclipse Award Horses of the Year.
