There are many different types of hobbies, including arts and crafts, sports, sciences, animals and collecting things. Hobbies can also be classified by whether they take place indoors or outdoors, or whether the hobby is competition-related.
Any interest that a person pursues in his free time can be considered a hobby. Many hobbies can be placed in multiple categories. A hobby such as woodworking is considered both art and a trade. Certain hobbies can become a person's job or career.
Hobbies that involve the arts can include both creating art, as in writing a book or acting in a play, and experiencing art, as in going to museums. Sports hobbies can include any sport that a person does for his own pleasure. Athletes who excel at a sport can turn it into a career, but the majority of athletes only play as a recreational hobby.
Science-based hobbies constitute a broad category that includes astronomy, biology, chemistry and even electronics. It can also include so-called disciplines rooted in superstition, such as astrology.
Animal hobbies include anything related to interacting with or watching animals. Raising or breeding dogs is one example, along with beekeeping, falconry and hunting.
People can collect almost anything. Common collectible items include stamps, coins, antiques, wine, books, knives and stuffed animals.
