Tampa Thoroughbred Races are thoroughbred horse races that take place at Tampa Bay Downs between November and June each year. Tampa Bay Downs is the only thoroughbred race track on the West coast of Florida. Horses race over a 1-mile conventional dirt track and a 7/8-mile grass turf track.
There are about 96 thoroughbred race days at Tampa Bay Downs each year. Tampa Bay Downs hosts six graded stakes races each year and 15 other stakes. The Grade II Tampa Bay Derby stakes race is an official prep race leading up to the Kentucky Derby, and the non-graded stakes have set record purses in recent years.
The track also offers a practice golf facility with simulcast racing for golfers to watch races and a high-stakes card room. The track has been in operation since 1926 and is one of the best maintained tracks in the nation. It is a member of the Thoroughbred Racing Association, the primary governing body of thoroughbred breeding and racing in the country.
