Released in 2011, "Super Mario 3D Land" is a game for the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS portable systems. Players take control of Mario and travel across stages while avoiding dangers, making difficult jumps and collecting a variety of items.
Mario games typically fall into either the 2D or 3D category; "Super Mario 3D Land" falls into the latter and takes advantage of the 3D capabilities of the 3DS, but players with a 2DS can play the game as well. Despite the 3D nature of the game and the somewhat open-world designs, each stage simply requires the player to reach the end of the level, similar to older 2D Mario games.
The familiar cast of Luigi, Peach and Bowser helps complete the game's story. Many of the elements of most Mario games are present as well. Players can break bricks, open mystery blocks, and collect mushrooms and other power-ups. The leaf power-up also makes a return, allowing players to use the raccoon tail that first made an appearance in "Super Mario Brother 3" for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Reviews for the game were positive, and the game won a number of awards after release. In addition, reviewers noted how useful the 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS were for the game. Instead of having to guess Mario's position when jumping on platforms, players could see Mario's position more easily.
