Litmus paper is available for purchase in packs at local pharmacies, medical supply stores and health food stores. It is used for medical purposes to check the body's alkaline levels and in various science experiments.
A common use of litmus paper is to check the pH balance, or alkaline balance, in the body when starting a new diet plan. The strips are also popular in a number of experiments and home tests, such as ovulation testing, pregnancy testing and science experiments for home school-based studies. Look under the name "pH strips" if searching for the term "litmus paper" proves difficult. Litmus paper is commonly seen in medical offices, emergency rooms and other medical-related clinics as pH paper.
Those unfamiliar with litmus strips may not realize that the most common usage involves urine testing. The strip is placed directly in the urine stream or a dropper is used to place a small amount of urine on the strip. After waiting at least 15 minutes, check the color of the strip against the chart included with the strips. Saliva can also be used to test a pH balance with litmus strips. In some cases, blood may be used depending on the administered medical test.
