The Starting Lineup action figure line is a brand of action figures based on real-life professional sports athletes. Kenner, and later Hasbro, produced the toys from 1988 to 2001.
Pat McInally, a Harvard graduate and former professional football player for the Cincinatti Bengals, came up with the idea for the line in 1986. The original figures in 1988 included 124 Major League Baseball players, 37 National Football League players and 85 National Basketball Association players. Additional figures included hockey players, boxers and race car drivers. Although demand started out strong, popularity decreased in the late 1990s. In addition, league lockouts and an increase in licensing expenses proved problematic for production.
