The Grand Theft Auto games allow players to move freely through urban environments with a focus on stealing cars and committing violent crimes. There are seven games in the series; only five are numbered but Vice City and San Andreas are also generally included. In addition to the series, there are many spin-offs with open world gameplay. The Saint's Row series is also somewhat similar.
Minecraft is a more non-violent alternative and has sold over 50 million copies. In Minecraft, players create their own items and materials and use them to build structures in an open environment.
The Far Cry series places players on a tropical island with freedom to move and find creative ways to dispatch enemies using natural features and wildlife as well as an array of tools and weapons.
The Fallout series takes place in a world devastated by nuclear war and allows players a great deal of freedom in shaping their characters and moving about the game world. Later games in the series that use three-dimensional graphics fit the Sandbox criteria better than the initial two-dimensional games.Learn more about Video & Online Games
