The objective of the saltine challenge is to eat a certain number of soda crackers within a set amount of time. Competitors are not permitted to drink water while participating in the contest.
It is unknown exactly when the saltine challenge became a chance to engage in playful rivalry with friends, but it remains popular due to its straightforward objective and the perception that it is not too difficult to accomplish. In reality, the challenge is hard to complete because participants are not permitted to drink water during cracker consumption, and the crackers quickly absorb saliva, making the saltines difficult to chew and swallow. Between five and seven crackers are standard for the challenge, and players generally have one minute in which to consume them. Participants are normally allowed to crush up the crackers beforehand but cannot leave any crumbs behind.
