Examples of rare $5 bills are the Demand Notes $5 Bill from 1861 to 1862; the $5 National Bank Note from 1863 to 1881; and the $5 Silver Certificate of 1886 and 1891. More examples are Series of 1896 $5 Silver Certificates and Series of 1882 $5 Brown Backs.
$5 National Bank Notes from 1863-1881 are the first types of national bank notes issued in the United States. These notes are referred to as first charter notes, and new examples of these notes rarely surface. Demand Note $5 Bills from 1861 to 1862 in good condition are rarely discovered. These notes can still be used today at face value. Some examples of the Series of 1882 $5 Blue Seal National Currency are scarce, and collectors refer to these bills as "date backs" or "value backs."
