Put lights into a wine bottle by cutting a small hole in the bottom of the bottle using a glass drill bit, and inserting a strand of Christmas lights. Another method is to cut off the top of a wine bottle, adding the lights and placing the top over them.
To add lights by drilling a hole in the bottle, get an empty, rinsed-out wine bottle, and don safety gloves and goggles to protect yourself from shards of glass. Next, place a piece of masking tape at the bottom of the bottle where you want to make the hole. Put a 1/2-inch glass drill bit in your electric drill, turn it on, and gently start drilling the hole. If you press too hard on the bottle, the glass can break.
The drilling process takes about half an hour. Remove the masking tape from the bottle, rinse it out, and allow it to dry before inserting a strand of lights into the hole.
Instead of drilling a hole into the bottle, score the glass, and hold it under a flame to make a clean break. Make a line along the bottom of top of the wine bottle, and score it with a glass drill bit or a glass scorer. Next, light a candle, and hold the scored part of the bottle over the flame. Slowly rotate the bottle over the fire for about 10 minutes, and then rotate it under running cold water.
Once the glass starts to crackle, hold each end of the bottle, and apply gentle pressure until the end pops off. Place a strand of lights or a candle under half of the bottle.
