Sites such as CheatCodes.com and GameFAQs.com provide cheat codes and information on other unlockable game features along with walkthroughs, trophy and achievement lists, and game hints. Cheat codes allow players to input a sequence of buttons to alter the game mechanics, unlock hidden features, or change game graphics.
Cheats for games such as “Grand Theft Auto V” allow players to restore character health, add additional weapons and powers, alter enemy behavior, and change character maneuvers. A code in “Mortal Kombat X” allows players to change a character's appearance. The sites also offer information on other unlockable features in these games, such as new player skins in “Mortal Kombat X” or in-game discounts in “Grand Theft Auto V.”
Cheat codes typically refer to codes programmed by game developers, but third-party peripheral devices, such as the Game Genie and Action Replay, allow players to alter program code to change gameplay in ways that are not in the original programming. For example, Action Replay codes for “Pokemon White 2” allow players to gain more experience points, boost health and obtain free items. Sites such as Code Junkies provide codes for these devices.
Though legal to use, developers and console manufacturers generally do not support these devices, though Sega endorsed the use of the Game Genie on its consoles.
