The Sony PlayStation 2 was released on Friday, November 24, 2000, in the United Kingdom and across Europe. It was originally scheduled for release one month earlier, but a shortage of necessary computer chips pushed back the date.
Half a million PlayStation 2 consoles were made available for sale on this date, with 165,000 of them going to the United Kingdom. Many of these consoles were pre-ordered before they even hit stores. The console was also released in Australia, Malaysia, Africa and the Middle East on the same date. It was released in the United States in October of 2000 and in Japan in March of 2000.
