The freezing of PlayStation 2 games can be caused by a dirty or scratched disc or a faulty console. Usually, a simple cleaning of the game disc solves freezing, skipping or loading problems on the PlayStation 2 console.
To clean the disc, use a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for cleaning CD/DVD discs, sold at most electronics stores. While cleaning the disc, start from the innermost circle, and wipe out to the edge in a straight line. Avoid wiping in a circular motion, as this may create more scratches on the disc.
If the disc still fails to function properly, try to play different CDs, DVDs, and games on the system to see if the problem exists across multiple discs. Also, attempt to play the problematic disc on a different PlayStation 2 to determine if the issue is with the disc itself, or the console it was played on.
The PlayStation 2 console should be kept away from excessive dust, smoke, steam, extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight. Static electricity and other factors may also affect the proper operation of the PlayStation 2 system. Excess static electricity can be cleared from the PlayStation 2 system by turning off the rear power switch and then turning it back on.
If the PlayStation 2 system still fails to function properly, the disc read laser may be dirty or damaged. Sony doesn't recommend the use of any type of lens cleaner. Repairs for the PlayStation 2 can be set up by visiting PlayStation.com
