The premise of "Stronghold: Crusader" places the player during the era of the First, Second and Third Crusades in control of either the Crusaders or the forces of Saladin in the Holy Land in the Middle East. The game includes several playable historical Crusade battles, including the siege of Antioch, the siege of Jerusalem, Krak des Chevaliers and the battle of Heraclea. In each battle the player is required to build both a fortress that serves as a headquarters during battle and an army that includes a variety of unit types. "Stronghold: Crusader" also allows the player to select from 16 characters that can be set as either allies or enemies, such as Richard the Lionheart, Saladin, Emperor Frederick, King Phillip or the Caliph.
