Trunk restoration as a hobby is fairly popular as of 2014. According to trunk enthusiast Paul Pat Morse, trunks are seeing a resurrection in popularity due to the historical significance. Trunks are often used for decoration and practical storage space.
Various types of trunks were popular from the 1700s until the mid 1900s. These earlier trunks were made of wood and covered with animal hides to protect the contents. Later trunks became more ornate and were fitted with iron and brass bands, locks and decorations. As Americans began traveling by train or steamer, trunks were made to store everything from hats and dolls to wardrobes and collections of books.
