Pokemon Crater was an unofficial online Pokemon game developed in 1999 that closed in 2007, after seven updates. The site relaunched in 2009, under the game title Pokemon Vortex.
Pokemon Crater shared many gameplay features with the core series. Registered players traveled through interactive maps, finding and capturing new Pokemon and engaging in turned-based combat with computer-controlled opponents and real players. Players controlled their characters in Pokemon Crater using just a mouse. The primary objective of the battle arena was climbing the ranks of the Top Trainers list, indicating that the player was one of the top 150 players. Players gained rank by leveling Pokemon to level 100, winning battles and gaining trades.
