Users can play some PlayStation 2 titles on a PS3 console by first downloading and installing "PS2 System Data" from the PlayStation Store. However, not all games function properly on the PS3.
Owners of PS3 systems sold in North America and Japan can install the software necessary to play PlayStation 2 games on their consoles. The following steps must be carried out before attempting to install a game designed for the older console.
- Select the PlayStation Store under PSN. Sign in to an existing account or create a new Sony Entertainment Network account.
- Download "PS2 System Data" from the store. Once the download is complete, the console automatically installs the file.
- Exit the PlayStation Store.
When users start a PlayStation 2 title that is compatible with the newer console, the PS3 displays an alert with instructions on how to proceed.
