The oldest toy in the world is the stick, according to the National Toy Hall of Fame. Since ancient times, children used sticks for batting items, throwing, playing with an animal or in creative play. Although the stick is considered the oldest toy, there are others that date back thousands of years, such as the doll, spinning top and yo-yo.
On an Italian island, archaeologists in 2004 discovered a stone doll head that dates back nearly 4,000 years. Archaeologists have also unearthed clay tops that are from the ancient Mesopotamian city of Ur. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks also had yo-yos. Egyptian children may have played a game similar to jacks, which involved throwing rocks into the air and clay pieces were picked up before the rock landed.
