The Barbie doll originated as a simple drawing named Lilli in a 1952 German magazine by Reinhard Beuthien. She was beautiful and scantly dressed and was turned into a doll in 1955. The doll was intended for an adult male audience. In 1956 an American toy maker, Ruth Handler, found the Lilli doll while on vacation in Switzerland. Her family's toy company, Mattel, reproduced the doll and marketed it toward little girls. During Barbie's first year, 300,000 dolls were sold. As of 2014, a Barbie doll is sold somewhere around the world every three seconds.
