Non-woven fabrics are engineered fabrics that have a variety of properties. They are generally absorbent, liquid repellent, resilient, stretchable, soft, strong, flame proof, washable, sterile, cushioned, filtered or protective. These properties are usually combined to produce fabrics appropriate for specific types of work.
Non-woven fabrics comprise a sheet of fibers, filaments or chopped yarns that are formed into a web and bonded together through mechanical, thermal or chemical processes. These fabrics are flat, porous sheets that are created from separate fibers or molten plastic. They are generally made by bonding or felting. Synthetic fibers are bonded together with heat or adhesive to make bonded fabrics. Wool fiber or animal hair matted together with heat, pressure or moisture make up a wool felt.
Non-woven fabrics are not weaved or knitted, and conversion of fibers to yarn is not necessary. However, they emulate the texture and appearance of a woven fabric. Non-woven fabrics have versatile features that are attained by using raw materials and treatments, such as printing, laminating, molding and embossing. They are generally created with a good balance between cost and product lifespan. They are used in various consumer and industrial products, including construction, engineering, filtration, health care, home furnishing, apparel and absorbent hygiene products. Depending on the purpose of use, non-woven fabrics are created with high durability, single use durability or limited life.
