The Nintendo Wii does not have a native ability to play DVDs. However, this function can be added by way of unofficial third-party database applications.
A number of different third-party software applications that allow the use of DVDs with the Wii are available. Two examples that do not require hardware modification of the system are the Homebrew Channel and DVDX. These methods were primarily designed to allow the system to run unauthorized software, but can also be used to play standard DVD movies. An open-source media player such as MPlayer may also need to be installed. Depending on the method used, this may also void the system's warranty.
