The "Need For Speed" video game series has a large number of entries. Multiple games are available for the 3D0, Nintendo DS and 3DS, Android, Arcade, Game Boy Advance, Gamecube, iOS, Macintosh, PC, Playstation, PSP, Vita, Wii, Wii U and Xbox platforms.
The "Need for Speed" is available for the Panasonic 3D0, Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn and PC platforms. This was the first entry in the series and was sponsored by Road & Track Magazine.
"Need for Speed II" was released for the PC and the Sony Playstation. "Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit" also was released exclusively on these platforms. "High Stakes" was released on these platforms and also had a Pocket PC adaptation. "Porsche Unleashed" was also released on these platforms with a Game Boy Advance adaptation.
All remaining games in the Need For Speed series would be released for the PC (with the exception of the Nintendo-exclusive "Nitro"). However, at this point in the series, the console releases moved to the next generation. The Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube got ports of "Hot Pursuit 2", "Underground", "Underground 2," "Most Wanted" and "Carbon." "ProStreet" and "Undercover" were released for the Wii and PS2 as well as for the PS3 and Xbox 360. A number of these games were also released on the PSP, Nintendo DS and various mobile phones.
The series fully jumped to the next generation of consoles with "Shift," eliminating ports for the previous generation systems. This generation saw the release of "Nitro," "Hot Pursuit," "Shift 2: Unleashed," "The Run," "Most Wanted" and "Rivals," the lattermost of which was also released for the PS4 and Xbox One.
In 2010 "Need For Speed: World" was also released, a PC-only free-to-play MMO.
