Harriet Beecher Stowe and James A. Michener are two of the individuals featured in the Distinguished Americans series that began in 2000. The stamps replaced the Great Americans series, which ran from 1980 to 1999.
According to the USPS, the series is dedicated to "politicians, literary greats, athletes, researchers and others who left their mark on the American conscience." The first stamp of the collection is a 10-cent postage stamp depicting four-star Army general Joseph W. Stillwell, released August 24, 2000. On March 13, 2014, World War II pilot C. Alfred "Chief" Anderson became the 15th individual featured in the ongoing series.
