Some of the most well-known toy companies include: Hasbro, KB Toys, Lionel Corporation, Little Tikes, Tonka, Mattel, Lego and Fisher-Price. Many toy companies also own smaller subsidiaries that manufacture toys under different names.
Hasbro is one of the largest toy companies in the world and was founded in the 1920s. It first gained attention with the release of the Mr. Potato Head toy in 1952. The company also went on to release the first ever action-figure toy, G.I. Joe, in 1964. As it has grown, Hasbro has gone on to take over other well-known toy companies such as Milton Bradley, Playskool, Kenner and Tonka. Many of these companies still produce toys under their original names, but they are owned by Hasbro.
Mattel was founded in 1945 and would go on to gain fame as the manufacturers of Barbie. However, the first toy that the company sold was the Uke-A-Doodle, the first in a line of many musical-themed toys. In 1960, Mattel released Chatty Cathy, a talking doll that brought big changes to the toy industry. Mattel also launched Barbie in 1959 and Hot Wheels cars in 1968. In the 1970s, Mattel created a new division devoted to creating electronic toys that manufactured early video game toys.
