Some of the most relevant Barbie characters that are still being made as of 2015 are Barbie's boyfriend Ken Carson, Barbie's little sister Skipper Roberts and Barbie's original best friend Midge Hadley. A large number of Barbie characters have been introduced and discontinued since the first Barbie doll was introduced in 1959.
Barbie's most important female friends that have not yet been discontinued include Christie O'Neil, the first African-American Barbie doll; Midge Hadley, Barbie's best friend since 1963, and Teresa Rivera, Barbie's Hispanic friend who debuted as the "California Dream" Teresa doll in 1988. In the movie "Barbie and the Diamond Castle," Barbie calls Teresa, Christie and Midge her best friends.
Barbie has had three discontinued siblings, two of whom were later reintroduced under a different name. The Barbie siblings still in production are Barbie's little sister Skipper, introduced as her first family member in 1964; Barbie's other little sister Stacie and her youngest sister Chelsea. Stacie was originally introduced in 1966 as Tutti with a twin brother Todd, who has since been discontinued. She first came available under the name Stacie in 1991. Barbie's sister Chelsea made her debut in 1994 as Kelly, and was replaced by Chelsea in 2011. Barbie's parents are George and Margaret Roberts who were introduced in Barbie's first book in 1960.
