The worldwide video game industry is forecast to reach $111 billion in sales in 2015, up from $101 billion in 2014, according to Gartner. The marketplace includes video game console hardware and software, as well as online, mobile and PC games.
Mobile gaming is the fastest growing segment of the market, with revenue set to nearly double between 2013 and 2015, from $13.2 billion to $22 billion, according to Gartner. Microsoft's profit from Android royalties alone is $2 billion, one Forbes report shows.
In 2014 video game consoles showed the biggest sales, at just under $50 billion, followed by PC games at $20 billion, mobile games at $17 billion and handheld video games with just over $15 billion in sales.
Handheld game devices and traditional PC games are expected to have a diminished role in the game market and cease to be important game platforms, states Gartner.
