A computer game first released in 2009, Minecraft gets its name directly from its gameplay mechanic: mining resources and crafting tools. Although Minecraft began as a computer game, console and mobile players also can enjoy the sandbox game. Prospective players can try a downloadable demo before purchasing the game.
Players can pick one of four game modes: Survival, Creative, Adventure and Hardcore. Survival and Hardcore both feature zero starting tools, meaning the player must find all the resources to build from scratch.
In creative mode, players have access to every block in the game and can build anything without limit. Players can only break certain marked blocks in Adventure mode, making it useful for community modders looking to create worlds.
