Minecraft was created in 2009 by Markus Persson. The game was officially released on November 18, 2011, at the MineCon 2011 keynote, and it is available for purchase on the Minecraft website.
Persson left his job at a large games developer to create his own game. He was inspired by "Infiniminer," a game by Zachtronic Industries where players collect resources in a randomly generated world. Persson's first attempt at Minecraft was called "Cave Game" and was a single-player block-based game. Adding multiplayer features and aggressive monsters to the game generated interest and awarded Persson with acknowledgement from popular gaming websites and blogs.
The rights to Minecraft were purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in September 2014. As of 2015, the full game is very popular and available on systems including Windows, Mac OS, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Android/iOS.
