There are two main types of guitar, acoustic and electric. Within those types there are many different varieties. The acoustic guitar is designed for performances in close quarters, whereas the electric guitar uses an amplifier for more sound, allowing the musician to play in front of a large crowd.
Unlike acoustic guitars, electric guitar bodies are made of solid wood. Acoustic guitars can have either nylon strings or steel strings. There are also electo-acoustic guitars, which are acoustic guitars that can be plugged into an amplifier. Electric guitars are usually more expensive to own than acoustic guitars because of the additional equipment needed, such as the amplifier and the lead.
