As of 2015, Wilesco, Mamod and Jensen Steam Engines all manufacture model toy steam engines. The German-based toy company Wilesco, founded in 1912, and the British-based steam model manufacturer Mamod, founded in 1937, produce similar toy steam engines and are generally considered rival companies.
Jensen Steam Engines, founded in 1932, is the only remaining toy steam engine manufacturer based in American. It is known amongst steam-engine hobbyists and collectors for its impeccable hand craftsmanship and keen attention to detail.
Although founded in 1912, Wilesco did not start manufacturing toy steam engines until 1950. It is well-known for its steam roller Old Smoky, which it introduced in 1966.
