To make a pumpkin stencil, select an image, and open it in a paint program on the computer. Fill in the areas that are not going to be cut out of the pumpkin with white and then remove unwanted parts of the image before printing.
After opening the selected image in the paint program, switch into RGB mode. This allows for easier resizing and better photo definition. Next, select the paint bucket tool, and use it to fill in the white for the areas that are not to be carved. Be sure to fill in areas that create a break between the inner and outer template.
Remove unwanted areas of the image with black or white. Use the crop tool to cut off the excess border, but leave about an inch around the template. Change the paint photo measurement option from pixels to inches, and resize the image to a suitable size for the pumpkin on which you plan to use it.
The stencil is now ready to be printed. If a larger stencil is needed, take it to a copy shop to be enlarged or print on a home copy machine. Attach the stencil to the pumpkin, and carve the design.
