  1. Assemble your materials

Purchase and assemble the materials you need for the lion costume. The costume requires approximately ⅓ yard (each) of felt in tan, light tan, yellow and gold, plus tan and yellow thread and approximately 6 ounces of polyester fiberfill for the tail.

  2. Make the tail

Cut a tail shape out of tan felt. Use a downloaded pattern if you are uncomfortable drawing one freehand. Sew the tail together, leaving a hole open on the side of the tail. Stuff the tail with fiberfill, then hand-sew the hole closed. Sew the tail to the back of the sweatpants. Cut eight pieces of fringe, two from each of the colors of felt. Line the fringe along a short strip of felt, sew them in place, then sew the fringe on to the end of the tail.

  3. Make the mane

Cut 100 strips or more out of all four colors of felt to serve as the lion's mane. Each strip should be 12 to 15 inches long. Cut a strip of felt that is 4 inches longer than the opening of the sweatshirt hood. Lay the mane strips out on this strip, alternating colors and sizes. Sew the mane strips in place. Center the backing strip at the top of the sweatshirt hood and sew it on, letting it dangle at the bottom edges of the hood. Trim the strips around your child's face so he can see when wearing the hood.
