Large stencils for the letters of the alphabet can be made at home by printing large block letters on acetate paper and cutting them out. However, large alphabet stencils are easily purchased in most craft stores.
- Gather the supplies
Collect the needed supplies including a word processing software, a printer, some acetate paper, a piece of cardboard and a craft knife.
- Type the letter
Open the word processing program, and type the letter needed for the stencil. Choose the desired font size and style. A 700 point size in most fonts will span an 8.5 by 11 inch page from top to bottom.
- Print the letter
Print the letter out on acetate paper. Allow the ink to dry for at least 10 minutes prior to cutting it out.
- Cut out the letter
Place the acetate paper on a piece of cardboard. Use a craft knife or X-Acto knife to cut away the section that will be painted. For example, if you wish to paint a positive image of the letter, cut away the letter itself. In order to paint a negative image, cut away the background and save the letter.
- Repeat the process
Repeat this process for all of the letters of the alphabet or duplicate the stencil for as many letters as you need for what is being spelled.
