To make a handmade baby burp cloth, stack two pieces of baby flannel with the rough sides facing each other, then sew the sides of the fabric together with a 5/8-inch seam. Cut lines with scissors perpendicular to the seam for a frayed look. Wash and dry to complete.
Apply a monogram or embroidery before sewing the pieces of flannel together to customize the burp cloth. To make the burp cloth a different shape, fold fabric in half before sewing. Cut at the fold, and round the edges. This makes the cloth come together at the middle while rounded and wide at either end.
Alternatively, make a fabric strip burp cloth by using a 10-by-22-inch piece of polar fleece and flannel scraps and strips of various weight cotton that match. Cut strips of cotton at least 10 1/2 inches long. Place the first and second strips of cotton next to each other on the flannel scrap, then pin together. Sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Continue to do this with the cotton strips until the flannel is covered, then flip the flannel, and trim the edges of the cotton strips. Put the flannel on the fleece with the right sides together, and sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, leaving an opening on a short end of the burp cloth. Flip the cloth right side out through the opening, then stitch closed to complete the burp cloth.
