How Do You Make Hand-Painted Ceramic Plates?

Hand-painted ceramic plates lend a festive air to special celebrations and make beautiful gifts. Create your own special plates using a narrow-tipped brush and stencils to apply ceramic paint to ovenproof plates that you bake in your oven.

  1. Assemble your materials

Gather together the required materials. You need white ovenproof plates, ceramic paint, stencils, tape, a pencil, a narrow-tipped brush and your oven. Make sure the paint you choose is food-safe and dishwasher-safe. You may use a ceramic paint pen instead of a brush if you prefer.

  2. Trace the stencil

Wash and dry the plates. Choose a stencil with the image or message you want to paint on your plates. Tape the stencil into place on the plate and trace it lightly using a pencil.

  3. Paint the design

Trace the pencilled design using ceramic paint or a ceramic paint pen, and fill in the design. If you make a mistake, wash it off. Add any other decorations you wish, such as painting a rim around the edge of the plates. Let the paint dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step.

  4. Bake the plates

Bake the plates at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Let the plates cool completely before using them.
