How Do You Make Glitter?

Bake salt or granulated sugar with food coloring to make your own glitter. This recipe creates an edible, non-toxic glitter than can be used in craft projects or on the skin.

  1. Gather your supplies

To make glitter, you need 1/4 cup of granulated sugar or salt, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid food coloring, a bowl, a spatula, a sheet pan and an oven. Any size salt grain or crystalline sugar works in this recipe. For variety, use different sizes. Please note that paste food coloring becomes discolored when heated, brown sugar is too moist and powdered sugar is not sparkly, so none of these should be used in this recipe.

  2. Mix the glitter

In a bowl, mix the salt or sugar and the liquid food coloring. With a spatula, spread the colored salt or sugar mixture out on the sheet pan.

  3. Bake the glitter

At 350 degrees Fahrenheit, bake the glitter mixture for 10 minutes. Let the glitter cool. Once cooled, store in a sealed container or bag until ready for use.

  4. Use the glitter

For craft projects, use the homemade glitter with your favorite craft glue. If you want to create body art, mix the glitter with corn syrup to make it stick to your skin.
