To make a curtain valance, determine the width of the window, measure the fabric and stitch the valance while following the measurements. Depending on the nature of the task, making a curtain valance requires several materials and tools, including thread, scissors, fabric, a tape measure, lining, an iron, sewing machine or needle and mounting board. The measurement of the valance depends on the measurement of the window.
- Determine the width of the window
- Measure and cut the fabric
- Stitch the fabric
Use the tape measure to find the accurate width of the window. This measurement allows for making a valance that bests fits the window.
Lay the fabric down and measure a section that is two and a half times the width of the window. Remember to add at least two inches for seam allowance. Be sure to mark the measurements on the fabric with chalk. Determine the length of the valance and double that measurement. Add a three-inch measurement for seam allowance and make the necessary markings with chalk. Use the scissors to cut the fabric accurately.
Fold the valance with the right sides facing out and ensure the fold is at the bottom. Measure one inch of the hem and use a sewing machine or needle to stitch the hemline together. Create a pocket for a curtain rod by measuring inches below the stitched hemline and sewing it.
