To make a belly dance skirt, make a full-length circle skirt pattern. The pattern should be a quarter of the circle. Cut one quarter-circle out of four different fabric colors, and sew them together. Add a waistband to complete the skirt.
- Take your measurements
Measure around your waist where you want the skirt to sit. This measurement is the circumference of your circle skirt waistband. Measure from that point to the floor to get the length of the skirt. Write both measurements down.
- Create the circle skirt pattern
Divide the circumference by 3.14 to get the diameter of your waistband. Divide the diameter in half to get the radius. Add the radius to the length from step one to get the pattern length. Cut out a square of cardboard or butcher's paper that is slightly larger than the pattern length. Cut a string in the length of the radius, and tape one end to a fabric marker. Hold one end tight to the corner of the paper, and rotate the marker from one edge to another to create a curved line. Do the same for the pattern length. Cut along both curved lines to create your pattern piece.
- Cut out the fabric
Buy four different fabrics, opting for light materials such as chiffon or silk to provide movement. Cut out one pattern piece each from four different fabric colors. Cut a long rectangle of fabric that is 4 inches tall and 3 inches longer than the waist circumference.
- Sew the skirt
Pin two pieces of fabric together with the right sides facing in. Sew them together along the straight edge. Attach the third piece on one long edge. For the fourth piece, sew about 1 foot down from the waistband. Fold the waistband piece in half with the right sides facing in, and sew along the long edge. Flip the tube inside-out, and slide in a piece of 1-inch elastic. Sew the waistband to the skirt. Hem all raw edges.
